Healthy eating on vacation… Is it even necessary?

February 10, 2010

Vacation means you’re allowed to be on an eating “free for all”, right?

Watch my video to see my exact eating strategy while I’m on vacation…and nope, it’s probably  not what you think.

YES.  I did film today’s video in my pajamas.  Why?  Why not?

  1. Great tips Isabel!

When I go on vacation I usually just focusing on staying away from the worst stuff, but I don’t worry about it too much.

I like to have fun on my vacation, but I still need to eat at least somewhat well otherwise I just don’t feel top notch.

  2. Hey Isabel,

You rock girl!!! I can see you flexibility… from the Bahamas to snow in New Jersey. I live in Holland, and this year we have so much wintertime and snow yes also snow!!! We never had snow returning again and again. I long for the spring. But snow still makes a wonderful romantic scene.
Flexibility in our life is a good thing and yes in our diet it is too, thank you for your great example in this, you even show it with you PJ’s on! We need to enjoy life, and we can if we are flexible and balanced. These video’s of you are helping me a lot! It is like I know you and we are in this together!
Have a wonderful vacation, lots of fun with you family and thanks for your time and friendly support always!

    warm regards,
    Annette

  3. Thank you this was helpful. Do you recommending limitig your intake of potato or sweet potatoes?

Also, I noticed that quienoa provides protien, but it isn\’t listed as a protein in you lists for the metabolic types. Why?

Instead of using sprouted bread all the time can you use bread made from millet flour?

  4. Isabel, I was so disappointed for you to have to give up your trip to the Bahamas!! Well, you definitely coped with that very well! I want to commend you on your commitment to your clients. I am new on board and I am so thankful that I found you! I was already aware of Metabolic Typing, Dr. Mercola and Sally Fallon, and have worked out \\"hard core\\" since the 80\\\’s… but the quantities of fats were always a mystery to me and I have been saved by the control and structure of your meal plans!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I am so impressed that you continue to do your video clips for us–everything is so informative. We will be going to Spain @ the end of March and I know that I will be having some cheat meals….likely in the form of Sangria!!

  5. great blog.
i am going over seas next week, so your info was very helpful.

    thanks

  6. Hi Isabel,
Thanks so much for your advice on not going ‘anal’ over a vacation! We’re leaving Friday for Vancouver for a BIG family meal at a Chinese restaraunt; very typical for my husband’s family!
I was already trying to plan what I would bring with me for some meals, ie. breakfast & snacks, your advice re: oatmeal or eggs plus raw nuts was very helpful.
I know we’ll be walking a lot, as we’re hoping to take in some of the free Olympic sites over the course of a few days.
Since, there are a lot of traffic restrictions, we’ll be using public transport, either bus or skytrain. Hopfully any indulgences will be worn off with all the walking!

    Cheers,
    Wendy

p.s. will send update when we return!

  7. amazing! like always..
just some videos i would like to watch:
    drinks at the bar
    and
cinnamon (in water) as a cleansing system?

    Thank you!!

  8. Hi Isabel!
I am new to the program, and I am very impressed with your video mail you just sent. I live in PA and am dealing with all this snow too! Actually, I used at as an excuse to make a really healthy dinner tonight – fish with a little organic butter, black bean/corn/mango/pineapple salsa and some steamed green beans for the kids. yum. I am disappointed that it costs so much money to be ‘healthy’ though. Just to stock up on my rations like nut butters, organic things, and coconut oil was almost $100 at Wegmans. But i’m glad i’m making the change!

  9. My wife and I just got back from Thailand. That was a challenge to eat right there. My wife is Thai and we stayed with family. So my food choices could be tailored a little more that just hotel or restaurant food would have been. However, you still have a culture that you have to work around and sometimes cannot get away from. So going to a foreign country can really challenge your food choices. It is a good idea to educate yourself before going. At least you will know what some of the main dishes are made with. Asian countries use a lot of MSGs and fish sauce that is very heavy in salt content. In the 3 weeks that we were there, I did gain 5 pounds. But then I ate things that I can only get there that should not have been eaten.

  10. Hey Isable,

Gerat information to have in vacation times. I like me to be free and flexible in vacation!!

    Thanks,
    Husain

  11. Great advice, Isabel! When I first started eating whole, natural foods, I was a bit too anal about what I actually ate, and it’s good to know that eating right 80-90% of the time is really the best of both worlds!

  12. Isabel, I am so impressed with you and Diet Solutions. This is my second week of the 14 day diet and I’ve never felt better. On a side note, but of tremendous importance to me, I have had an ongoing struggle with alcohol (white wine) for 10 plus years. Perhaps not full blown alcoholism, but too close for comfort. Finding you and following Diet Solutions has given me the hope for change that I haven’t had in years. My evening cravings for those 2 (large) glasses of wine are gone!!! Thanks so much and by God’s grace I will continue following this plan. Also, keep those videos coming – they are great motivators!! Love ya! Julie

  13. Great advice Isabel, there will always be a healthy option when on vocation. One has to just look for it and it will be there.

  14. Hi Isobel- Thank you for your tips for eationg when travelling, I am in fact about to travel with work interstate and your tips have been extremely helpful! I really appreciate the time you take to teach us how to make better eating choices so that we can live a healthy life.

Anyone else in Australia following your plan? I would love to make contact and exchange notes. My email is:- neidenbach@bigpond.com.au

  15. Great information! I’m really impressed by your commitment to good health. Thanks.

  16. Isabel!
I was excited to see what it would have been like in the Bahamas, but like you said i’m sure you will be able to go again! I just started your program, and I am already loving it! I loved all your tips for eating out! Keep the video clips coming, they help me stay motivated!!!
    Thank You

  17. You show so much grace – the way you coped with the situation re: not having a passport for your baby!!

Thanks for the tips re: eating out while on vacation – I often “forget” to decline the bread they immediately bring to the table or think I’ll just not eat it – then mindlessly eat it anyway. SO not worth it – thanks for the reinforcement!

Enjoy the snow – I’m snowed in, too – and in my PJs and glasses. So nice to see you are just like all of us. Okay, you’re skinnier and more fit – but we’re getting there with your help!

Thank you – and now you have more time to dream about your trip to the Bahamas!

  18. Hi Isabel !
It sounds that you are quite demanding customer for any restaurant. You are lucky to live in America, here in Finland you propably get kicked out from all diners with all your questions and requests ;-D.
We have used to have snow quite a lot during winters here but over 3 ft in 24 hours like you have got, sounds grazy.
Thats what we get in three months !!! Hopefully you manage back home safely….

  19. Hi – thanks for this advice. I\’ve got a good starting point because I\’m a Coeliac, so have to avoid anything with gluten in. It means I eat an awful lot of salad when I\’m away! I\’ve got used to adapting recipes etc, and though I\’ve lost a bit of weight, I\’m still carrying more fat than I want to! Everybody thinks Coeliacs are thin, and I used to be, but 3 years ago I was diagnosed with MS and I spend a lot of time fairly immobile, so the weight creeps on! I\’m off to Malta next month, so will definitely take what you\’ve said with me!

  20. Muchas gracias!!

  21. Great info. I always want to know more info from people who people achieve impossible goals(i.e. only 1 lb of fat per week can be lost, unless of course you actually meant weight.) I was wondering since you have principles for fat loss(or weight loss), what is your take on muscle gain?

  22. Isabel,

I just got back from a mini vacation from and I tried to apply all of the DSP principles. I had packed some Kashi bars, cookies and those cheese crackers. What is your take on Kashi? Is it a no go?

    thanks,
    Karen

  23. You girl, are a genius. Your blogs are so informative but at the same time you add your character & personality in it which definitely makes what you have to say to us NOT boring. Thank you times a million!

    - christy

  24. Karen, Kashi bars are processed, so I don’t recommend eating them.
